Proteus is a subnet built on the Bittensor network that provides decentralized inference for AI agents, structured as a mixture-of-experts system. Independent GPU operators, called experts, run models and agents that answer inference requests. A validator acts as a router: it classifies each incoming request, sends it to the experts best suited to handle it, evaluates the quality of the response, and updates on-chain weights through Bittensor's Yuma consensus. Emission of the subnet's native alpha token, $PRTS, is distributed automatically through Bittensor's dTAO mechanism based on this scoring, so token issuance follows the quality and volume of work actually performed rather than raw computational throughput. Proteus does not operate its own blockchain; it inherits Bittensor's consensus, staking, and token-emission infrastructure, and focuses its engineering effort on the incentive mechanism that scores and routes inference requests across the network of experts.
